Yesterday I was fixing an SSD problem that annoyed me for the last week
There is a bug in the firmware that causes the disk to crash every hour
Release Date: 01/13/2012
Change Log:
1 Changes made in version 0002 (m4 can be updated to revision 0309 directly from either revision 0001, 0002, or 0009)
2 Correct a condition where an incorrect response to a SMART counter will cause the m4 drive to become unresponsive after 5184 hours of Power-on time.
The drive will recover after a power cycle, however, this failure will repeat once per hour after reaching this point. The condition will allow the end user to successfully update firmware, and poses no risk to user or system data stored on the drive.
This firmware update is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED for drives in the field. Although the failure mode due to the SMART Power On Hours counter poses no risk to saved user data, the failure mode can become repetitive, and pose a nuisance to the end user. If the end user has not yet observed this failure mode, this update is required to prevent it from happening.
If you are using a SAS Expander please do not download this Firmware. As soon as we have a Firmware Update that will work in these applications we will release it.
So I updated the firmware from version 0002 to 070H (what is 7 versions later
)
And now it's all fine again while the SSD starts up twice as fast and got alot more inprovements
Normally my pc would start up in about 35 seconds
Now it's round the 15 to 20 seconds
So always update your firmware
(was alot easyer than I expected)
Anyways while I fixed that I thought looking at the video card one more time
Decided to open it up and see if there is a load of dust in the heatsink.
Almost nothing but the thermal paste looked like old clay.
So after putting some new fresh thermal paste on it and screwing it all back together
There was a little problem because the screen stayed black
The pc didn't see the video card anymore and almost thought I had to buy a new one an that this one was finished
After pluging the card in and out it made some connection again
The result are AMAZING
here some tempatures:
Before the fan and the thermal paste:
Idle.........40/45 °C..(browsers/video on youtube etc)
bf3 game..95/96 °C
off...........34/36 °C..(just monitor off and sleeping mode)
Sounded like the pc was going to explode
After the fan was installed:
Idle.........35/40 °C
bf3 game..89/92 °C
off...........34/36 °C
Sound: was still very high
After new thermal paste:
Idle.........29/32 °C
bf3 game..72/74 °C...1 straight line
off...........24/28 °C
Sound: A little baby sleeping
What a little bit of thermal paste replacement can do
(when I have the chance Will post more pictures of the fan in the inside vieuw and the outside)
