PostSubject: A new Fan for my case   A new Fan for my case EmptyThu May 23 2013, 19:04

I thought it would be better to buy a new fan for the back of my case
One that can blow out more heat so it doesn't get so hot inside (90 to 95 degrees) whistle

Celtic you had some nice fans in your system that were pretty good
Can you make a recommandation?

And does anyone know if a thicker fan is better?
Or it takes more place so the air flow isn't good?
There is room for a thicker fan but i don't know if that's better

The fan needs to be 92 mm

Here some pictures:

I found something already don't know if this one is good:

I want a fan that can alot of air out of the case
(at least that is what i assume that the air is blown out of the case instead of in)
I don't really care about the noize so much
because the video card fan already explodes with every game clubed

Is that 90°C measured at the motherboard? If so that's really hot (and might be hotter somewhere else on the board.)

First things first. Is your motherboard able to control the case fan speed (does it support PWM control?)
If so, have you looked at more aggressive BIOS cooling profiles or something like SpeedFan [wikipedia.org] in Windows?

A fan with thicker blades could certainly move more air. Normally you would go for a wider (120mm) fan but, as you say, you're limited to 92mm diameter.
A better solution would probably be to add more fans. It looks like your case has no vents at the front but what about the top or the side?
I'd be tempted to take the side panel off and see how easy it would be to hack a 120/140mm (intake?) fan onto it.

Here's a roundup of some 120mm fans [anandtech.com] (92mm comparisons seem a little harder to come by.) The Corsair fans look good but sadly no 92mm variants.
http://www.corsair.com/en/cpu-cooling-kits/air-series-fans.html

I actually have a Noctua NF-B9 in my mythtv box but I bought it for its quietness rather than max air flow. Hopefully Celtic or Cranix can add their expertise.

Hey Malki
Sorry I explained it a bit different
My video card is up to 90°C or sometimes up to 95°C
Cpu etc has a normal tempature i guess

The motherboard controls the fan speeds
I thought that if I replace the side fan with a better fan
The video card get more cooling and is a couple of degrees less hot

Weren't there exenders too for the fans that you have some sort of platform
Then you can maby place a 120mm fan on a 92mm fan
Like this:
A new Fan for my case Extend10

Could that be a possibility?

Anyways I don't think it's a solution for me to put a fan on the side
Because I don't really know much about this stuff
And that is the side that comes on the case
So how are you going to put on the power cable and connect it
to the power supply or maby motherboard when the side is still off?

I just hope solve a bit of the problem with a better fan on the side
At least that would be the easiest one

I had more problems with the software errors etc headbang
Takes up days of time Neutral

Will look around for that speed fan/aggressive Bios
But I'm not sure if I want to mess with that stuff again pcpunch matrix

Well anyways thx for the advice Malki

That 92 -> 120mm adapter/extender looks like it would be too big for your case.

If your motherboard and cpu temperatures are OK then I'm not sure how useful a bigger fan at the back will be. Your graphics card is also blowing out the back, right? Forcing more air out using the fan above it might not help much. That's why I suggested a new intake fan to try and get more airflow underneath the gfx card.

Adding a fan to the side panel would be a DIY project. Some drilling to make the vents big enough for the fan screws and a longer power cable to get the side panel off without unplugging it.

You could test it using some cable ties (assuming the vents are big enough for a 120mm fan and that there is space between the case and the gfx card.)

Imagine my amazing mspaint graphics on the inside of the case ;-)

In the meantime maybe you could make life easier for your graphics card:
Turn on VSync (so it is only rendering 60fps)
Turn off effects like Ambient Occlusion, Antialiasing
Lower the resolution

Okay i'll have a look at the project
I don't think it would be an option for to replace the case
like you suggested Celtic
Just don't have the time money and abilitie to just get one Shocked
But thx for the tip anyway

I'm not very technical to just put on a fan on the side hypno but probably someone from the family can help cool

I want a fan that doesn't make so much noize
And if it's installed it need to blow inside right? so that there is a better air circulation.
would be somethying like this be good:
High pressure fan
Or would this fan make more noize then this one:
High airflow efficient fan
Oh and how could I get a longer power cable?
Do most of the fans have it already or do you need extenders?

And that speedfan thing is that or are there programs were you can adjust your fans? instead of messing with the bios
Like on Msi afterburner you can set a speed to your gfc fan
(though I can only put my fan to 70%)

Thx for the advice Smile !

Okay I orded a Fan now
Should be arriving soon and hopefully
To get it fixed this weekend

Anyways Malki about the picture you draw
Isn't it better to move the fan more to the button:
A new Fan for my case Dscf5814
See the arrow's where the video card is located
Is it better if the fan blows over the video card on both sides
So that Air can come under the video card too (where the circle is located)

And is it better to close of some of the open spot so the air circulation is better?
Or just leave it like this and cut open on the part where the fan is going to be?

And one last question I saw on my power supply that it has a maximum of 450W
could the power supply  easaly handle an extra fan?

I would try positioning the fan as low as possible (at the bottom of the holes in the side of the case.) Take the side panel off and secure the fan using some cable ties if you don't want to drill. Be careful not to bang the blades in the middle of the fan because it will make more noise if you knock it off centre. Hopefully the fan comes with an adapter so you can plug it into a free molex connector from that bundle of wires on the right-hand-side.

Later you might drill 4 holes in the side panel (or widen the existing slots) to screw the fan in more permanently. I don't think you need to cut any big holes or close any holes up.

I don't know how high your PSU is loaded but the extra fan will only add 1-2W so I wouldn't worry.

First we measured everything to where the whole was going
And where the screws were going

Then we Cut out the whole with this thing:
A new Fan for my case Figuur10
Fretsaw in english maby Question
Pretty though to get through so that took a while
Eventually we made some holes for the switch screws
We placed it in and connected it
here a little result from the side:

10 degrees cooler on the video card cool
Still hot but less hot then it first was Razz

Nice work gamer. 10 degrees cooler sounds like a good result. Cool
Personally, I like to tweak the settings when I install a new game to keep the GFX temperature around 65-70°C.

Very nice job with the case cutting too. Are you going to put some mesh on the outside to protect the fan?

I'm curious Gamer, is the fan blowing air inside the case or extracting?

Yeah I don't know yet Malki
Is it essential to install a mesh outside?
Because at the moment I don't have one laying around
And It's not like I'm putting stuff there that can be sucked in.

Celtic-Warrior wrote:

Well it's blowing inside ofcourse to keep the ventilation optimal
So that the video card can absorb the fresh air.

Was thinking to tape the rest of the wholes so that the cooling can better Question

PostSubject: Re: A new Fan for my case   A new Fan for my case EmptyTue Jul 09 2013, 02:32

Ideally you want the exit fans to be pulling the air through the system. The idea is to create negative air pressure, i.e more going out than in.

This helps because it eliminates stagnant air, cos' if the intakes are pushing more air in than the exhaust can remove the fans won't be working efficiently at all.

My configuration in my case is: 4 medium front intakes( 2 in front of Hdd 2 behind), 3 medium outlets (two side of case one at the back) and a large exhaust at the top.

Hope that helps.

A new Fan for my case Empty
PostSubject: Re: A new Fan for my case   A new Fan for my case EmptyTue Aug 20 2013, 11:22

Yesterday I was fixing an SSD problem that annoyed me for the last week
There is a bug in the firmware that causes the disk to crash every hour

Release Date: 01/13/2012
Change Log:
1     Changes made in version 0002 (m4 can be updated to revision 0309 directly from either revision 0001, 0002, or 0009)
2     Correct a condition where an incorrect response to a SMART counter will cause the m4 drive to become unresponsive after 5184 hours of Power-on time. The drive will recover after a power cycle, however, this failure will repeat once per hour after reaching this point. The condition will allow the end user to successfully update firmware, and poses no risk to user or system data stored on the drive.

This firmware update is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED for drives in the field. Although the failure mode due to the SMART Power On Hours counter poses no risk to saved user data, the failure mode can become repetitive, and pose a nuisance to the end user. If the end user has not yet observed this failure mode, this update is required to prevent it from happening.
If you are using a SAS Expander please do not download this Firmware. As soon as we have a Firmware Update that will work in these applications we will release it.

So I updated the firmware from version 0002 to 070H (what is 7 versions later laughing  )
And now it's all fine again while the SSD starts up twice as fast and got alot more inprovements
Normally my pc would start up in about 35 seconds
Now it's round the 15 to 20 seconds affraid
So always update your firmware cool  (was alot easyer than I expected)

Anyways while I fixed that I thought looking at the video card one more time
Decided to open it up and see if there is a load of dust in the heatsink.
Almost nothing but the thermal paste looked like old clay.
So after putting some new fresh thermal paste on it and screwing it all back together
There was a little problem because the screen stayed black silent
The pc didn't see the video card anymore and almost thought I had to buy a new one an that this one was finished
After pluging the card in and out it made some connection again extra_happy

The result are AMAZING hypno extra_happy cool clubed cheers affraid cyclops
here some tempatures:

Before the fan and the thermal paste:
Idle.........40/45 °C..(browsers/video on youtube etc)
bf3 game..95/96 °C
off...........34/36 °C..(just monitor off and sleeping mode)
Sounded like the pc was going to explode

After the fan was installed:
Idle.........35/40 °C
bf3 game..89/92 °C
off...........34/36 °C
Sound: was still very high

After new thermal paste:
Idle.........29/32 °C
bf3 game..72/74 °C...1 straight line
off...........24/28 °C
Sound: A little baby sleeping affraid

What a little bit of thermal paste replacement can do lol!
cheers
(when I have the chance Will post more pictures of the fan in the inside vieuw and the outside)
